On Tuesday on Tuesday, the San Diego Press Club Excellence in Journalism Awards took place in Balboa Park. During the event, the newspaper received six awards, including the top local news site. First-place winners included the Contributing Photographer Chris Stone from La Mesa as well as Contributing Editor Ken Stone. They won prizes for their photographic as well as their reporting abilities. They worked together on two projects. Chris Stone took home the three categories of still-news photography. In the end, Chris Jennewein, Del Mar’s editor and publisher received a award in honor of his selection.
Times of San Diego is proud to be named the most popular news site within San Diego six times. Times of San Diego attracts daily new readers and can receive the prestigious recognition due to Ken, Chris and JW.
Three men were recognized with awards by San Diego Union Tribune staff as well as contributors who have been awarded special recognition in news, media and public relations. Steve Fiorina, a CBS reporter, received the Harold Keen Award for Outstanding Contribution to Journalism. Jorge D’Garay, a Binational Public Relations Executive, was awarded the Andy Mace Award For Outstanding contribution to public relations. Brad McLellan, a former Chief Assignment Editor of KGTV was awarded the Jim Reiman Award to Outstanding Media Management.
The Times of San Diego is proud to announce that it has won the top spot in three categories in vice’s competition. Chris Jennewein is an employee of the Times of San Diego employee was awarded the category news website. Jennewein received the coverage of elections category for his piece, “Voter Guide: San Diego County and State Races during June Primary Election”. And in the essay/commentary/opinion category, Jennewein won for his article “Newspapers Squandered Their Monopoly-Era Profits and Now Blame Google and Facebook.

Honor Flight is a laudable program, and it’s always uplifting to hear the stories of those who took part. A major oversight of this program is the lack of women veterans. While it’s unfortunate that there aren’t enough female veterans in a position to take part in an whole flight of honor it doesn’t mean they are any less significant. Honor Flight is an excellent method to honor the veterans who have served and should keep supporting it.
